Some might say she had an eye to the main
chance. She liked to hold peoples attention in company and was a clever
conversationalist. She found it difficult to let go once she had someones
attention and could be quite manipulative when she wanted to be. The long
trails at the end of words show that she liked to linger in situations longer
than strictly necessary, be they conversations or social occasions, perhaps for
dramatic effect or because she was generous with her time and by nature a
giving person. There are flashes of temper and building up of frustration shown
in this writing but also strong control, so that any displeasure would only be
likely to be displayed in private.

Her strong point was communication with
others. She was diplomatic and polite and had an easy and expressive manner.
Essentially kind hearted, she was true to her friends and showed a devoted
nature. She sought out and needed to have company around her, and the better
the company the more she felt it elevated her position in society. And the
reason she needed to feel that she moved in the right circles was to dispel a
hidden insecurity.
Beneath the outward show of brilliant
self-confidence, there are signs that the writer had moments of doubt. She
worried about what others thought of her and felt in some way that she was not
as good as the others, and spent her time trying to dispel these feelings.
Emotionally she could become anxious needlessly. Decisions could be delayed
until she felt sure of the right way forward. She could be hesitant about
trivialities, and was very concerned to protect herself from the criticisms or
wrath of others.
She was extremely receptive to the thoughts,
problems and opinions of her friends and acquaintances, and was undoubtedly a
good shoulder to lean on. However, she had a difficulty dissociating herself
from their problems and keeping an emotional distance. It was in her nature to
be a good friend and an understanding one, and her best defence against
emotional issues was not to take matters too seriously. A sensual woman, she
needed to feel close and secure and was prepared to offer that security also.
The scandal that surrounded her contentious
liaison with the then King of England had must have gone some way to assuage
her need to move in the best circles. She could have handled with some pleasure
and skill being the talking point of society. However, the family hostility and
the exile after his abdication must have been particularly hard to bear for
Wallis Simpson, who above all craved brilliant company and approval.
